Botanical Formulations Advanced Lecture
Being an herbalist is both a science and an art form. It involves understanding plants, their constituents and how they might be curative in a particular disease. The art of herbalism is matching the energetics of a plant with the patient who seeks their help. Learning to put an herbal formula together involves a deepening of one's understanding about the particular energetics and specifics of the plants as well as developing an intuitive sense of the person who needs these plants.
I have often thought of being an herbalist as being good at matchmaking. An herbalist is one who knows which plant will get along best with their client to serve in their health. When one has so many nervines or cholagogues to choose from how do you know which one to choose for each individual client? My goal in this class is to help teach those herbal matchmaking skills. My second goal is to help the student structure a foundation in herbal formula-making skills. How does an herbalist put together a formula that will work well for their client? This is a class that will help the student understand how to do this.
The first class will begin our exploration of how to better understand the client and the plants. The classes will take a round table pathological case history based approach towards exploration of formula building. Each class will also focus on specifics of key herbal remedys to begin the process of deepening our understanding about these botanical medicines. Literature that may be explored in the class includes Eclectic medical literature, Michael Moore, Matthew Wood, plant spirit medicine authors, and Greek and Roman myths.
Instructors: Dr. Anne Hill, ND has been a clinical herbalist since 1994 and is a professional member of the American Herbalist Guild. Michelle Salob, ND is on the faculty of NCNM and works at Outside In, a health care clinic for homeless and at-risk youth which offers medical students training in botanical, homeopathic and nutritional acute care medicine.
